Creating a study programme
Study Programme is a Department of Education initiative which aims to individualise all learners’ education and training experience, whilst enhancing their employment opportunities. Study Programmes are designed to complement all learner pathways (both vocational and academic). Below is a list of the components centres should consider when putting together a programme.

The Project Qualifications
The Higher Project allows learners to create an extended piece of work to complement their Level 2 studies in, for example, City & Guilds Technical qualifications, GCSEs or as part of a City & Guilds TechBac programme.
Through the Extended Project learners can create an extended piece of work that supplements their Level 3 studies in City & Guilds Technical qualifications, A Levels, NVQs and apprenticeships or it can be taken as part of a City & Guilds TechBac programme. Alternatively the Extended Project qualification may explore an area of personal interest or activity outside the main programme of study.
Substantial Core Qualification
Each programme of study must have one sustainable size qualification (between 270 and 300 GLH). In addition to considering the size of the qualification, centres need to ensure that progression pathways and options for employment are available. City & Guilds offers over 500 qualifications across 28 industries. Visit our qualifications and apprenticeships page to see our full offer. Each individual qualification page includes the guided learning hours; supporting you in building your curriculum.
Maths and English
Maths and English are essential requirements of the study programme. Learners are expected to have already achieved or be working towards GCSEs in maths and English, grades A*-C. Where not applicable, learners can take an alternative English and Maths qualification.
Our comprehensive English and Mathematics suite of qualifications provides centres with options to deploy either Functional Skills or our new English and maths offer across multiple levels and allow learners to focus on the skills they need to help them progress.
Work Experience
The work experience offered will need to meet the individual needs of the learner based on the type of qualification and the career path they have chosen. Work experience, where applicable, is encouraged and likely to be a substantial element of the study programme for learners. Many City & Guilds work-based (NVQs) qualifications contain work placement units within them, which provide learners with practical opportunities for work experience. Our Employability and Personal Development (7546) qualification includes pre, during and post work placements units; and may be used to demonstrate participation. It should be noted work experience must be with external employers to count towards the planned hours under the ILR system.
Entitlement/Tutorials
These are enrichment activities which fall outside the core programme of study a learner takes. Examples could include mentoring or team working.
Employability
All Learner programmes at Entry and Level1 are likely to include some form of employment focused skills training. Our Employability and Personal Development (7546) qualifications provide perfect work ready solutions through accredited learning. Salford City College share the benefits of offering their learners accredited employability qualifications. View the video on the right to see the benefits.
Additionally
Smaller qualifications can be taken that complement the learner journey, these might be similar to the main core programme of study, be based around a learner interest, or enhance employment opportunities. We offer a range of short unit including the Level 2 Award in Customer Service (8992-12).
